How many times have you scrubbed your face with cleanser, only to have red, teary eyes as you valiantly try to get the last dredges of mascara off your lashes? Now imagine that same feeling experienced by your child. Pretty terrible right? Sure, the packaging claimed the wipes or body wash were gentle but reality played out differently with stinging, discomfort, and watering. That’s where the term “tear-free” comes in. It sounds like a marketing phrase but there’s actual research and testing behind this claim. And it’s something we take seriously at Rini, where our Daily Care Foaming Face & Body Wash and Full Face and Eye Wipes are proven to leave your little one feeling clean, moisturized, and free from any irritation.
Why Do Some Products Make My Eyes Sting?
Your makeup remover wipes are great at taking off everything from foundation to mascara to eyeliner. To do so it likely requires the use of stronger cleansing agents, which are formulated for adults and can cause irritation. While you already know that’s not ideal to use on your kids, ones that are marketed towards families might not be right either. Often adapted from baby wipes, which are designed to clean the diaper area — not your face, which is more delicate with the eye area being the most sensitive courtesy of its thinner skin . Plus, they’re not ideal for taking off sunscreen, face paint, or even sweat and grime. Scrubbing plus irritating ingredients? That’s a recipe for redness and tears.
A product, whether it’s shampoo, lotion, or face wash, marked “gentle” might not be the case. Besides cleansing ingredients, factors like preservatives, added fragrance (one of the most common causes of irritation!), and pH levels play a role. The solution: look for something marked “tear-free.” That means it’s been designed and tested to minimize the risk of eye irritation.
So, How is Rini Tear-Free?
For us, tear-free starts at the formulation stage for our Daily Care Foaming Face & Body Wash and Full Face and Eye Wipes, using plant-derived cleansers, proven ingredients that provide moisturize, and omitting anything known to irritate. Plus, Rini Full Face + Eye Wipes are made with biodegradable bamboo-cotton cloth, making it exceptionally soft and gentle around delicate eye areas.
But formulation alone isn't enough: Rini tests to ensure this is the case, undergoing two independent eye irritation assessments. The first is called EpiOcular™ Eye Irritation Test or EIT for short. Using reconstructed human corneal tissue, this advanced method evaluates a product’s potential for irritation without the need for animal testing. The second is Ocular Instillation Testing which ensures that the product won’t sting or cause tears. It’s a clinical study and uses 14 healthy male and female subjects between the ages of 28 and 70, Both our Daily Care Foaming Face & Body Wash and Full Face and Eye Wipes passed with flying colors.
